Wise Review for Sending Money to the Philippines
By the MoneyTransfer.ph team (Dominet BV). Updated · Facts checked · How we compare
The short answer
- Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a separate fee you see before paying, so it's easy to compare.
- It's often a strong choice for bank deposits from the US, UK, Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia.
- It pays to Philippine banks and to GCash and Maya, but wallet transfers are capped at 50,000 PHP each and there's no cash pickup.
- It doesn't yet let you send from UAE dirhams or from Saudi Arabia.
Wise (formerly TransferWise) built its brand on one idea: use the real exchange rate and show the fee separately. For Filipinos abroad sending to a bank account, that often makes it one of the cheapest options. It's less complete than remittance-focused apps when your family needs cash pickup, though. This review explains where Wise wins and where it doesn't.

How Wise works
- Create a Wise account and verify your identity. Wise asks for ID and sometimes proof of address, depending on your country.
- Enter the amount in your currency. Wise shows the fee, the mid-market rate it will use, and exactly how many pesos arrive.
- Add your recipient: a Philippine bank account, or a GCash or Maya wallet.
- Pay by bank transfer, debit card, credit card or other local methods offered in your country.
- Track the transfer in the app or website.
If you already hold money in a Wise account, for example a salary paid into Wise in GBP or USD, you can send straight from your balance.
The rate and fee, explained
Wise's pitch is simple: it converts at the mid-market rate, the same benchmark you see on Google or on our rates page, and charges a transparent fee. That fee usually has a small fixed part plus a percentage of the amount, and it changes with:
- the currency you send from,
- how you pay (bank transfer is usually cheapest; cards cost more),
- the amount (Wise lowers the percentage for large amounts in many currencies).
Because there's no hidden margin in the rate, comparing is easy: look at the pesos received. Note that other apps sometimes show a lower or zero fee but use a weaker rate, so the fee alone can mislead you.
Wise also offers a rate guarantee for a set period once you've created a transfer; if your payment arrives after that, the rate may be updated.
Payout options in the Philippines
- Bank deposit: to most Philippine banks, including big names like BDO and BPI. You'll need the recipient's full name as it appears on the account, the bank and the account number.
- GCash and Maya: Wise can send pesos directly to these wallets. Wise's help centre caps each wallet transfer at 50,000 PHP, so for bigger amounts use a bank account or send more than one transfer.
- No cash pickup and no home delivery. If your recipient needs cash at a pawnshop or remittance center, use a service like Remitly, Western Union or WorldRemit instead.
GCash lists Wise among its official international partners for several countries. See send money to GCash.
How you can pay
Options depend on where you live, but commonly include:
- Bank transfer (ACH in the US, Faster Payments in the UK, SEPA in Europe, Interac e-Transfer or bank transfer in Canada, local transfer in Japan): usually the cheapest.
- Debit card: faster, slightly more expensive.
- Credit card: the most expensive pay-in option. Wise's help centre warns that card issuers may treat Wise payments as a cash advance (merchant codes 4829 or 6012), with extra fees and interest. Read our credit card guide.
- From your Wise balance, if you already hold the currency.
Where Wise serves Filipinos (and where it doesn't)
Wise lets you send to the Philippines from the US, the UK, the EU, Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong and more. Gaps that matter for OFWs:
- UAE: Wise received licences from the Central Bank of the UAE in October 2025, but it doesn't yet offer sending from AED. Check the app for updates. See our UAE guide.
- Saudi Arabia: not available for sending. See our Saudi Arabia guide.
Is Wise safe and licensed?
Wise is regulated in each market where it offers transfers. The ones we checked on 21 Oct 2026:
| Country | Regulation |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Wise Payments Limited, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority as an electronic money institution (firm reference 900507) |
| United States | Wise US Inc., registered with FinCEN as a money services business and licensed as a money transmitter in US states |
| Canada | Registered with FINTRAC (M15193392) and registered as a payment service provider with the Bank of Canada |
| Japan | Wise's Japanese entity, registered funds transfer service provider (registration 00040), Type 2 for transfers up to ¥1 million and Type 1 above that |
| UAE | Licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE (October 2025), though sending from AED isn't open yet |
Wise's parent company is publicly listed, which brings extra public reporting. As an e-money provider (not a bank) in most markets, Wise safeguards customer money rather than covering it with deposit insurance.
Speed
Wise says many transfers arrive within seconds or minutes, but the timing depends on how you pay, the currency, and whether Wise needs extra checks. Bank transfers in can take longer than cards. The app shows an estimate before you confirm, and updates you as each step happens. First transfers can take a bit longer because of verification.
Limits
Wise's sending limits depend on the currency you send from and how you pay. On the Philippine side, the main limits to know are:
- 50,000 PHP per transfer to GCash or Maya,
- higher limits for bank deposits, which Wise lists in its help centre.
If you send large amounts, Wise may ask for documents about the source of funds. That's a legal requirement, not a sign of a problem.
Tips before your first Wise transfer
- Match the name exactly. Philippine banks and wallets can reject a transfer if the name doesn't match the account. Ask your family to send a screenshot of their account name.
- For GCash, use a fully verified account. Unverified wallets have low limits and may not receive international transfers.
- Pay by bank transfer if you're not in a hurry. It's usually the cheapest pay-in method on Wise.
- Check the arrival estimate. If it says the money arrives tomorrow, tell your family so they don't worry.
Referral and first transfer offers
Wise usually doesn't run "welcome rate" promos like remittance apps. Instead it has a referral program: on 21 Oct 2026, a UK referral offered a fee-free transfer of up to £500 for the person invited. Terms vary by country. See our dated first transfer promos.

Look elsewhere if you:
- need cash pickup or home delivery,
- want to send more than 50,000 PHP in one go to GCash,
- live in the UAE (for now) or Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wise good for sending money to the Philippines?
Yes, especially to bank accounts. Wise uses the mid-market rate and a fee shown upfront, so it's often among the cheapest options for bank deposits. It's less useful if your family needs cash pickup.
Can Wise send money to GCash?
Yes. Wise sends pesos directly to GCash and Maya, up to 50,000 PHP per transfer. For more, use a bank account or split the amount.
Does Wise have cash pickup in the Philippines?
No. Wise only pays into bank accounts and mobile wallets.
Can I use Wise in the UAE or Saudi Arabia?
Not to send money from AED or from Saudi Arabia yet. Wise received UAE central bank licences in October 2025, but sending from dirhams isn't open. Use a local service in the meantime.
Is Wise safe?
Wise is regulated in every market where it offers transfers, including by the FCA in the UK, FinCEN and state regulators in the US, FINTRAC in Canada and the Financial Services Agency framework in Japan.
Why does Wise show a fee when other apps say zero fee?
Because Wise doesn't add a margin to the exchange rate. Apps advertising zero fees usually earn through the rate instead. Compare the pesos received, not the fee.
